Years ago, I came across research that looked into why a few boys — growing up in the most difficult communities — beat the odds. They avoided crime, overcame challenges, and grew into healthy, successful adults. Almost every time, the difference was the same: they had been part of a community organization that gave them purpose, belonging, and direction.
I later saw this firsthand. While working in a ministry serving gang-involved and high-risk families in Los Angeles, I watched transformation happen. Boys who once had no hope began to change when they had someone to believe in them.
As a teacher, I’m limited in what I can do inside the classroom. But outside the classroom — through adventure, faith, mentoring, and community — I believe we can help boys in Oxnard grow into strong, good men.
That’s what Los Bros is about.
